Welcome
to Clarendon! |
 |
Nestled in the scenic landscape of the Texas
Panhandle, Clarendon is a picturesque town whose future is as bright as
its past is colorful. Settled in 1878 by Christian Colonists under the
leadership of Rev. L.H. Carhart, Clarendon was one of the first three
towns to bring civilization to the Panhandle region. Cowboys from the
other pioneer communities - Tascosa and Mobeetie - nicknamed the town
"Saints’ Roost" because the Methodists who settled there
wouldn’t allow liquor, fire arms, or other rowdiness to interfere with
their commitment to advancing Christianity, Temperance, and Education.
Today, Clarendon is a growing community and offers
many attractions for visitors and their families. Several fine antique
shops are located on the red brick main street of downtown along with
retail stores carrying everything from jewelry and Western apparel to
handmade cowboy boots. Historical landmarks and recreational activities
are also available for your enjoyment.
We invite you to come visit for a spell or to settle
down here. We guarantee, you’ll find the friendliest people, the best
schools, a wide assortment of local restaurants, and many other benefits
in our vibrant community.
